Watchdog Timer

The Watchdog Timer is a timer that is integrated into software or hardware that will trigger a system reset or put the system in a fail-safe mode if the program stalls for an unknown reason. A watchdog timer is set to run for a certain amount of time and when the timer runs out - it enters the system into the designated state. If the timer is reset before this occurs, then the system will continue to operate as normal until it runs out again. Management of the watchdog is important otherwise you can accidentally trigger your robot to reset.

Using a watchdog timer in your system is good practice. If the system stalls, instead of your robot remaining in an unknown and potentially unsafe state, the system will be forced into a safer mode and will recover more gracefully.
