Microsoft NET
Microsoft .Net logo Microsoft NET (in short - .Net) is a framework developed by Microsoft. The framework supports multiple programming languages, such as C# (pronounced C Sharp) VB.Net (VB stands for "Visual Basic") and J# (pronounced J Sharp) –which is a Java-like programming language.
Microsoft's .net framework must be installed before use of the system (on both the computer you write the program on, as well as anywhere you want to run the program on). This poses difficulty if your system you wish to run the program on does not come with a set of .net framework, which is usually the case in robotics environments. .net has a very large support base and because it is used all over the world, finding help is a breeze. In terms of a learning curve, VB is probably one of the easier languages available that will allow you to generate a windows, web or server based applications with object oriented architecture and events. This ease of use does come with a few drawbacks and if you wish to develop a cross platform application, you might want to look elsewhere,.net applications can only run in windows. (and on Linux using limited support by the
Mono project)
As a side note, all programs that use Microsoft’s .net framework are actually not compiled into machine code when you package your program for use, and instead are packaged into an intermediary language. This language is then compiled into machine code at run time using a JIT compiler (Just In Time). To learn more about this process and how.net actually works, feel free to explore the links below.
