The programming language Java is cross-platform originally that was developed by Sun Microsystems. Java is similar to C++ in that the formatting and structure have similar style. The difference is that when a program written in Java is compiled, it is not compiled into machine code (as with C++), but rather into Java specific bytecode that can be interpreted into machine code at the time of execution. A Java Virtual Machine interprets this bytecode and must be installed prior to running a Java applicaiton. This is similar in operation to Microsoft's .NET framework – which operates in similar fashion. With Java however, you can install the Java Virtual Machine on many different platforms, which makes Java a handy language to know. Additionally Java can be embedded into an HTML document using a Java applet. Java can be used to provide processing control to your robot.
