Resolution

A Resolution refers to the amount of information that can be encoded in a piece of information. Often this is used to describe the accuracy of A Sensor or the size of instruction a robot can handle. A resolution of 8 bits means that the robot can deal with 8-bit numbers (256 unique posibilities). If your robot has an 8-bit analog to digital converter (ADC) then you know that it can only differentiate between 256 voltage points. Thus, if your 8-bit ADC can measure between 0 and 5 volts, then the maximum amount of accuracy you can distinguish between will be ~.02 volts (Voltage Span / # of numerical possibilities). If we want to generate a more accurate reading, we would have to increase the resolution of our ADC, or get one that detects a smaller range of voltages. With a resolution of 12 bits, our voltage accuracy will increase to: (5v/1024) = ~.0049 volts!
