Accelerometer is used to determine the magnitude and orientation of acceleration. One of its main uses is to figure out a device’s direction within the gravitational field. Gravity is a form of acceleration that is constantly pulling us and our robots to earth. Robots can use accelerometers to determine how quickly they can accelerate a fragile object, or provide feedback to determine if they have lost traction.
Accelerometers are used in devices such as smartphones or computers to provide feedback for drop detection or directional input. So next time you tilt your phone to control a game you are playing - you are using the accelerometer to do so!
Accelerometers can come packaged in various shapes and sizes, but for most real-world purposes they exist as small chip / IC that can be soldered onto a computer board.
