EMI

An EMI stands for Electro-Magnetic Interference and can be a big problem in the fields of robotics. Examples of devices that use electromagnetic radiation to function are WiFi signals, radio transmissions, and GPS receivers – to name a few. Electromagnetic radiation encompasses a large portion of our world that we can't see or feel and we need a device to detect and interpret these signals.

EMI refers to a similar set of signals, except that they are unwanted. Any device that runs off of Electricity is going to generate some sort of electromagnetic signature whether planned or not. If these signals are powerful enough, they can cause havoc on unshielded wires and generate false signals that a robot could interpret improperly. It is important that a robot is properly shielded from acting on as well as generating stray EMI emissions.
